1 million jobs figure modest; several jobs not captured – Government

The Akufo-Addo led government has defended the one million figure it has given as the number of jobs it has created since assuming office a little over a year, saying the actual number of employment created has even been under reported.

According to the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Bright Wereko Brobbey, a lot of jobs were not captured at the time of doing the collation.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, on May 1, 2018 during the Workers Day celebration announced that the government in its short stay in office has created over one million jobs in both private and public sectors.

According to him, the number is minus the jobs created in the informal sector.

But that announcement was met with suspicion by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) which has contested the figures put out by government arguing that the jobs are non-existent.

However speaking to host Akwasi Nsiah on Si Mi So on Kasapa FM, Hon. Bright Wereko Brobbey insisted that the jobs captured are real, adding that their work was corroborated by SSNIT as the beneficiaries pay the contributions.

“The figure we’ve put out are going to change in the next week or two. After we put out the figure, several institutions have called our ministry complaining that they’ve created a particular number of jobs that we did not capture. The figure we reported is on the modest side, after the Ghana Statistical Service is done with its work we’ll have a comprehensive report that will capture the specific details. For now, it is a fact that these people are employed and are taking salaries at the end of every month.”
