20 illegal miners arrested at New Abirem, equipment seized

The Kotoku Environmental Task Force has arrested 20 suspected illegal miners in New Abirem, Eastern Region.

The group includes 18 Ghanaians and 2 Chinese nationals, apprehended while mining at the Abirem Roman Missionary House Down site.

During the operation on October 12, 2024, authorities seized 2 excavators, various mining equipment, and 2 pumping machines.

An amateur video shows Birem North DCE Raymond Nana Damptey attempting to intervene in the task force's actions.

The suspects are now in police custody.
