The President of the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, Ebbo Botchway, has opposed the new 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products, arguing it will harm businesses and worsen consumer conditions.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight, Botchway criticized the lack of consultation with the association and highlighted that not all plastics have negative environmental impacts, suggesting rigid plastics should be exempt.

He also noted the existing 10% tax under the Customs and Excise (Amendment) Act of 2013, which generated over 1.97 billion Ghana cedis for plastic waste management but has yet to fund any recycling initiatives.
