The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Effutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has argued that prosecuting Nana Appiah Mensah would not be the best course of action.
According to a report by 3news.com, he said that the scandal involving Menzgold Ghana Limited needs to be handled with care in order to get something for the aggrieved clients.
He further explained that criminal prosecution of Nana Appiah Mensah and the directors of Menzgold Ghana Limited may result in the loss of investments.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Monday, January 14, 2019, the MP further noted that even in advanced jurisdictions, criminal prosecution in matters such as Menzgold’s is not an immediate option.
In his opinion, the attitude of the company’s staff and customers, as well as the politicization of the scandal, has led to the present situation.
“The customer needs his money, true. If you prosecute the man, if you look at the Financial Taskforce Regulation, there is a strong recommendation for a civil forfeiture procedure in matters as complicated as we find it now. Again, you would not get what you want,” he argued.
To him, the Menzgold scandal started off as a very simple matter but has not been well handled.
There have been conflicting reports with respect to Mensah’s arrest in the United Arab Emirates.
News of his arrest was allegedly confirmed by the Ghana Police Service, but this was denied by the Dubai police.
