The Affirmative Action Bill, aimed at ensuring equitable election of males and females to Parliament, has encountered a setback in Parliament.

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu argued that some provisions are unconstitutional and would be struck down by the Supreme Court.

He cited Article 94, stating that political parties cannot be mandated to field female candidates.

Meanwhile, Helen Adjoa Ntoso, a supporter of the bill, emphasized the importance of fair representation for women, who constitute 51.2% of the population.

Iddrisu also criticized a provision requiring positive media portrayal of women, arguing it infringes on media freedom.
