Akufo-Addo gives IGP 100% support in action against Midland policeman

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has lent his “complete support” to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for his swift action against the police officer who visited violence on a lady with a two-month old baby at Midland Savings and Loans.

A video of the incident triggered public outrage after it went viral on social media Friday.

The IGP, David Asante-Apeatu, directed the immediate arrest of the officer, Lance Corporal Godzi Federick Amanor, and initiated criminal processes against him.

In a statement issued on Friday, the police high command issued a stern warning to all officers “reminding them to desist from any such human rights abuses and misconducts”.

In a post on Twitter, a day after the incident went viral on social media, President Akufo-Addo reiterated the fundamental role of the police.

“Policemen are meant to protect citizens and not to assault citizens.”

He continued: “The measures that the IGP has taken to sanction the erring policeman, and to make sure these things don’t happen again, have my complete support.

“I support 100% the measures he has taken, so that we can stop these incidents from proliferating.”

Already, the uniforms and weapons of the officer have been seized while his home is said to have been ferreted for any property belonging to the Ghana Police Service.
