President Akufo-Addo has nominated two new judges for the Supreme Court: Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, a legal academic, and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a Court of Appeal justice.
Their nominations follow approval by the Judicial Council and will be vetted by Parliament.
Prof. Oppong would join Prof. Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu as a legal academic on the bench, while Justice Bernasko Essah brings extensive experience as a State Attorney and judge.
The nominations come after Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo requested five additional judges for the Supreme Court. If approved, these nominations will bring the total number of Supreme Court justices to 17.
