Akufo-Addo not fighting corruption, I’m disappointed – PC Appiah Ofori

Anti-corruption campaigner, P.C. Appiah Ofori, says President Nana Akufo-Addo has not demonstrated enough commitment to fighting corruption in the country for the three years he has been in office.

The President, he claimed, failed on his promise to Ghanaians to protect the public purse, citing the Auditor-General reports as clear case of corruption under his government

“President Akufo-Addo is not protecting the public funds because report from the Auditor-General indicates there are some public officials who are engaged in corruption but they have not been sanctioned and that means he is not protecting the public funds” he said.

The former New Patriotic Party MP for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa in May 2017 asked Ghanaians to give the President support because he was committed to the corruption fight in Ghana.

“I have confidence in him [Nana Akufo-Addo] that whoever has stolen the nation’s money, whether during the NDC era or under his administration will be dealt with,” he told Rainbow Radio two years ago.

But speaking to Onua FM Tuesday in Accra two years after, Mr Appiah Ofori expressed disappointment in Nana Akufo-Addo’s government for not doing much to fight corruption in the country.

“I am disappointed in President Akufo-Addo in the fight against corruption,” he said contributing to a discussion on corruption on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Asempa.

The former MP observed that after creating the office of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, not much has been done by the Akufo-Addo government to resource the anti-graft office to enable it perform its function.

The SP office, he said, currently lacks the needed resources to function effectively.



“The Special Prosecutor initiative was good but he is complaining of lack of resources to work and that is where my disappointment is,” Mr Appiah Ofori said.

In October this year, the Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu revealed he has been unsuccessful in accessing the 180 million dollars allocated to his office in 2019.

“You say you have given GH¢180 million. I cannot access the GH¢180 million because as we speak today, my office has not been classified for procurement purposes,” he told David Ampofo on Time With David show.

For P.C. Appiah Ofori, the Special Prosecutor should be given all the needed logistics to work.

“He should not be limited so that he can streamline the public sector,” he urged.

He added: “We have not done well in the fight against corruption as a nation.
