The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has disqualified Mr Masawudu Mubarick from contesting the party’s parliamentary election in the Asawase Constituency of the Ashanti Region meant to elect a candidate for the 2020 general elections.
The sole rival to the incumbent Member of Parliament, Muntaka Mubarak, was disqualified based on the recommendations of the Doe Adjaho-led Committee for Settlement of Outstanding Disputes, which was tasked to deal with all disputes and petitions pertaining to the internal polls – one of those being a petition filed by Mr Mubarick after the party refused to sell him nomination forms on the basis that he did not qualify to run on the ticket of the NDC.
The decision, therefore, means Mr Mubarak, who is seeking re-election, automatically becomes the candidate for the 2020 polls.
A statement issued by the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party on Tuesday, 3 August 2019, said per the Doe Adjaho Committee’s recommendations, Mr Massawudu Mubarick stands “disqualified to contest the Asawase Constituency for the 2020 elections”.
“By this decision, Hon. Mubarak goes unopposed, and for that matter, stands elected as the parliamentary candidate for the Asawase Constituency.”
