Atlanta’s HBCU Morris Brown College hires New Department Chair of Business following full accreditation after two decades

After a diligent search, Morris Brown College has hired Dr. Yaw Amponsah Adoo as its new Department Chair of Business. Dr. Kevin E. James, the 19th President of the college announced today.

As the first hire post-accreditation, he joins Morris Brown College with regional and international experiences as a proficient management professional with multidisciplinary skill sets covering collegiate instruction, 10-plus years of education, training, organizational leadership, and professional development.

His research interests focus on how employee work motivation and well-being are affected by organizational change and uncertain employment relations.

Dr. Adoo’s body of work demonstrates his profound commitment to quality education, scholarship, advocacy, and mentorship. He has made numerous presentations at regional and national institutions and is the author of many publications.

In January 2017, Dr. Adoo was an invited guest to the Junior Chamber International (JCI)-Ghana sponsored First National General Assembly & Young Active Citizens Symposium.

As Assistant Professor of Management at Shorter University, he was featured in the editorial section of The Christian Index, the oldest continuously published religious newspaper in the US entitled “Shorter professor becomes part of national policy conversation in Ghana.” His story gained international attention and was highlighted by Shorter University.

Most recently, he was featured in the second edition (Winter 2019) of Obimanso magazine, a catalog for Africans in the diaspora about their businesses, lifestyle, and commitment to Africa.

In December 2020, Dr. Adoo struck a corporate partnership with Fruitful-Land Academy, a 300-maximum seat capacity privately owned school that serves children between the ages of 3 and 15 in Gomoa Fetteh Kakraba in the Central Region of Ghana. A Memorandum of Understanding was written to provide scholarship assistance to pupils and offer free teacher training to boost quality education.

Born and raised in Ghana, Dr. Adoo published two articles that provided recommendations for public policy for the National Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the Republic of Ghana.

The first was “The 11th point plan Dr. Bawumia missed: A rejoinder to the 10-point plan for solving graduate youth unemployment in Ghana.” The second article; “Three metrics to ensure equal employment opportunities for persons with disabilities” was a follow-up to the previous article. Since then, the Ghana government has increased access to persons with disabilities on many fronts.

Dr. Adoo is currently working on many projects, a few of which are listed. He is a frequent contributing writer to INUA Magazine, an online digital magazine celebrating and elevating black leadership, entrepreneurs, and advocacy across the world. Considering the conversation surrounding race equity, understanding and value, he is currently working with his team to publish a peer-reviewed research article in the Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology academic journal.

He is supporting students in West Africa with quality education through The Adoo Family Foundation and penning Beyond a Good GPA, the latest go-to book of guidance, information, instruction, and recommendations for graduates as they seek their careers and adjust to the new realities outside the walls of college campuses.

Dr. Adoo graduated from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Economics, BS in Business Management, and an MPH in Community Health Education. He obtained his doctorate degree in business administration (DBA) from Argosy University/Atlanta’s College of Business, an ACBSP-accredited program.

He is a proud high school alumnus of Adisadel College and Ghana National College, both in the Central Region of Ghana.

Dr. Adoo will lead all operations and strategies to continue advancing the mission of Morris Brown College. Dr. Adoo brings a breadth of experience from industry and international relations to the classroom as he prepares to lead the Department of Business. Dr. Adoo will start on July 1, 2022, and will report to Dr. Anthony Johnson, Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Morris Brown College was founded in 1881 by the Georgia Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and named after one of its bishops.

It was the first institution of higher education in Georgia, USA created by Black people for Black students. The college currently offers a handful of bachelors’ degrees in hospitality management, music, and psychology.

It also offers certificates in business entrepreneurship, eSports, and nonprofit management. Its tuition is $4,250 per semester. Morris Brown College is one of 10 fully accredited historically Black colleges and universities in Georgia, USA.

Morris Brown College is a member of the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS), having been awarded Accredited Status as a Category II institution by the TRACS Accreditation Commission on April 26, 2022.

TRACS is recognized by the United States Department of Education (ED), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE).
