Bawumia meets Charlotte Osei

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last Saturday met with the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Charlotte Osei at the Kundum festival of the chiefs and people of Nsein, in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

The Kundum festival is celebrated by the Ahanta and Nzema people of the Western Region. It is celebrated to thank God for the abundance of food at the time of the harvest period of the area.

The EC chairperson who is a native of the area, was accompanied to the festival by Madam Eva Mends, Director of Budget at the Ministry of Finance who is also a native of Nsein and Madam Josephine Nkrumah, chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

On arrival at the durbar grounds, Madam Charlotte Osei and her entourage, exchanged pleasantries with the Vice President and other dignitaries on the dais before taking their seats.

The celebration was also graced by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Abelema Afeku who doubles as the Member of Parliament for the area, the Regional Minister, Dr Kweku Afriyie and his deputy, Gifty Kusi.

The rest were Joe Ghartey, Minister for Railway Development, Kweku Esiama, Roads and Highways and Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah as well as a host of several chiefs, elders, high profile dignitaries and citizens of Nsein.

The festival, which was also used to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the enstoolment of the Omanhene of Nsein Traditional Area, Awulae Agyefi Kwame II, saw the display of rich culture by some chiefs and queen mothers in the region.

The event brought together thousands of people, amidst the pomp and pageantry. It was on the theme “50 years of Successful Traditional Leadership; It is not by might”.

Addressing the gathering, Madam Eva Mends encouraged the parents in the various communities in the traditional area to take the education of the girl child very seriously to produce more prominent female citizens from the area.

The MP for the area, Catherine Abelema Afeku indicated that various projects would soon be initiated to help develop Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira of the Western Region.

She indicated that it was refreshing to see the young people playing different roles in the festival, adding that, it was a sign of preserving the country’s rich culture for the younger generation, especially in the face of technological advancement.

She pointed out that the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy being implemented by the current government presented a golden opportunity for more young Ghanaian girls to educate themselves.

She cautioned the female students who are the first beneficiaries of the Free SHS not to rush into adulthood which comes with a lot of responsibilities but rather aim high to achieve their dreams and aspirations in life.

Later, the Vice President and his entourage visited the tomb of Paa Grant, who was a member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) at Axim and paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of Lower Axim Traditional area, Awulae Attibrukusu.
