Cedi depreciation: Stop speculations; too late for jab – Oppong Nkrumah to Minority

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has criticized the minority over their statement that government should accept it has failed to stabilize the cedi and economy.

The minority in their press conference Wednesday morning noted that the cedi is not appreciating while claiming that government has been trying to confuse ordinary Ghanaians by peddling falsehood.

“Speculations by the minority that the cedi will hit before the end of the year, I will say that, that is a deliberate attempt by the minority to heighten speculation and if that speculation become successful then they turn round and say that it was something that they predicted… and it is unhealthy,” he argued.

Briefing the media, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said that the cedi has seen an appreciation in the last few days and the Akufo-Addo government is working hard with the Bank of Ghana and Central Bank.

He said: “The fact now is that the cedi is seeing some appreciation in the last two, three days and we are clear that it is the interventions that government through the Bank of Ghana has initially put in and went through central bank as well has been working on and therefore we are seeing the effects of speculators.”

Commenting on the assault on some Ghanaian Times journalists, the Information Minister noted investigation will be conducted after which those found guilty would be dealt with accordingly.

“We have been in touch with the Interior Ministry and the police service, it’s my understanding that they have taken statements and they are proceeding to conduct their investigation on this matter,” he said. “We continue to insist that the speed with which the persons who assaulted the police officer were quickly found and arrested and dealt with, that same speed should be applied in finding the officers who assaulted this persons.”
