Changing voters register is unnecessary – Asiedu Nketiah

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has reiterated that calls for the creation of a new voters register won’t be the panacea to address the current shortfalls within the electoral system.

He argues that the country had a superior biometric registration that formed the basis for the compilation of the 2012 voters register.

“This is a widely accepted and best form of technology used around the globe; therefore it is unnecessary to change it,” he adds.

According to him, reasons cited for the basis of this call by the opposition New Patriotic Party is illogical, insisting that such demands were untenable, he told Kweku Owusu Agyei on Si Me So on Kasapa 102.3 FM.

The largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by its Presidential Candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has severally called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to clean up the existing register and come up with a new one.

The party insists that the fact that 56% of the 25 million Ghanaians are registered as voters is an anomaly that has to be addressed with urgency.

The party has taken its campaign for a new register a notch higher by trying to get other opposition parties to join forces and put pressure on the EC to meet their demands.

But Mr Asiedu Nketia noted there are no strategic measures aligned to their demand to correct what he said was the best and credible voters register.

He said the NPP’s argument for a new register has severally been defeated and wonders why they continue to push this same agenda.
