‘Chinese galamseyers’ often released over lack of interpreters – Forestry Commission

George Agbenowoshi, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, has expressed frustration that Chinese nationals arrested for illegal mining (galamsey) are often released due to a lack of interpreters in court.

He noted that cases drag on and are eventually dismissed due to the language barrier.

Agbenowoshi also highlighted challenges faced by district Forestry offices, including delayed funding, inadequate logistics, and difficulties in prosecuting Chinese nationals.

He emphasized the need for improved resources to effectively combat forest offences, including galamsey, illegal farming, and lumbering.
