Chinese miners, aided by influential Ghanaian collaborators, have reportedly taken control of Goldfields’ abandoned Mantraim shaft in Tarkwa, jeopardizing the company's operations.
Goldfields Ghana Limited, which has owned the Tarkwa site since 1993, closed the shaft in 1999. Despite a court injunction against any further development, the miners are aggressively pursuing their takeover.
Local sources warn that this situation could escalate into conflict and potential fatalities if not addressed.
The ongoing encroachment raises concerns about safety and the legality of the miners' actions.
