The Kennel Union of Ghana is pushing for more dogs to be deployed on Election Day, for security purposes.
According to the union, the sensory advantages dogs possess are far sharper than that of humans and must be tapped into to maintain peace at polling centers nationwide.
“Dogs have an added advantage...their sense of smell is far better than that of a human. They sniff drugs. They sniff explosives and they can even sniff buried humans, in terms of a disaster.
"So definitely dogs as part of our service; I say we should incorporate them, they have a big role to play,” an executive member of the union, Ani Perterson said.
A dog trainer, Kenneth Singah, added that, dogs are the best creatures to use to detect weapons and explosives therefore the security services need to use more of them in their operation.
“I have sent a proposal to the police to form a K9 unit but I am yet to receive a favorable response. The Ghana Military dog training academy has been doing its best to enroll more of them.”
The union made the call at a Dog Fun Day event held at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre.
