Fredericka Serwaa Doku, a registered dietician and Chief Executive Officer of Hale and Hearty Nutrition Limited, has insight on how diet and nutrition helps in managing PCOS.

Speaking with eTV Ghana’s Eunice Tornyi on the African Women’s Voices show, she intimated that there is no cure for Polycystic Ovarian Cyst (PCOS), however, its causes are either genetic or environmental and the genetic causes can only be managed but the environmental causes, fortunately, can be reversed.

She noted that diet and lifestyle are the main and first line of treatment for PCOS and went on to detail how dieting helps manage the condition.

“Diet and nutrition play a critical role in the sense that dieting can help to lose weight which has been caused by PCOS”, she said. In the long run, losing the excess weight caused by PCOS by dieting can also help regulate irregular menstrual periods as well as reduce insulin resistance.

Again, Fredericka mentioned that acne and hair loss, which are also symptoms of PCOS are as a result of some micro-nutrient deficiency. Therefore, dieting and having a balanced meal can go a long way to help reverse these symptoms.

Although she recommended dieting as the main way of managing this condition, Fredericka also advised that once the symptoms of PCOS start to show, it is best to visit a doctor so as to be taken through the needed tests for surety of what the symptoms really mean.
