EC has failed to effectively regulate political parties - Prof. Ayee

Speaking at the 70th Annual New Year School held in Accra, Professor Ayee accused the Electoral Commission of being non proficient in terms of regulating the behaviour of these political parties by demanding audited accounts, removal of posters and other materials from public facilities after elections among others.

He went on further to challenge the commission to set up a regulatory framework that would be used in supervising and monitoring the operations of Political parties to ensure transparency.

“The electoral commission unable to regulate political parties, they do things as they like. They are supposed to bring accounts after elections and they’re not able to do that. There’s no regulation on the election calendar so campaign starts right after elections. They are doing election related issues for all the four years. No regulation. Some countries take of their banners the following day after elections but if you go round Accra, there are billboards that have been there two years after elections. The electoral commission has not been able to enforce rules and regulations” he stated.

The opening ceremony of the 70th Annual New Year School and Conference was held at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana on Monday 14 January 2019 under the theme, “Building strong institutions for democratic consolidation in Ghana.



The ‘week-long ‘conference seeks to provide a platform for discussion of important issues of national and international concern.
