On October 5, a powerful protest against illegal mining, known as galamsey, concluded in Accra with a 12-kilometer march.
The protesters, mostly youth dressed in red and black, demanded an end to environmental destruction and the release of 53 detained activists.
Starting from Okponglo, they carried placards with messages like "We need clean water" and "Stop galamsey now."
Despite heavy rain, the demonstration ended near Accra Sports Stadium with a vigil and a screening of a documentary showing galamsey’s devastating effects.
Earlier, petitions were submitted to the Attorney General’s Department and Lands Ministry.
