Eyes on the Ground: Food vendors record low patronage on first day of lockdown

Though they are exempted from the partial lockdown of Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi, some food vendors chose to stay away from their shops Monday morning perhaps to keep themselves and their families safe from the dreadful coronavirus pandemic.

Read full articlevendors operating at Dodowa Amanfro speaking to Ghanaweb said patronage has reduced drastically and affected their sales since the president announced the partial lockdown.

A porridge seller, Fawzia, stated that “market has been bad for some time now. From the time the president announced the lockdown, customers have stopped buying and it has really affected sales.”

“If I should compare previous sales to the current on a percentage of 100, I will rate it at 85% because sales have been poor after the pronouncement,” she added.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announcing the partial lockdown to the nation on Friday, March 27, 2020 stated that some individuals and institutions with essential services maintain operations during the exercise.

Among these were Members of the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary. Production, distribution and marketing of foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, medicine, paper and plastic packages etc.

Ghana so far has recorded 152 confirmed cases of coronavirus. Of the number 5 deaths and 2 recoveries have been recorded.
