GAF to collaborate with small-scale miners to combat galamsey – Fatimatu Abubakar

Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar announced that the government will intensify its “Operation Halt” initiative against illegal mining (galamsey).

The Ghana Armed Forces, along with the Small-Scale Miners Association, will target illegal miners polluting water bodies.

The move follows pressure from Organised Labour, which called for a ban on all mining activities along rivers and the repeal of a law permitting gold prospecting in forest reserves.

In protest of the government's inaction, Organised Labour has declared an indefinite strike starting October 10, and the Media Coalition Against Galamsey is urging citizens to wear red armbands in solidarity.
