Dr. Jamal Tonzua Seidu, an energy and environmental law consultant, has criticized the government's use of the military to combat illegal mining (galamsey), calling it unconstitutional.
Speaking on Citi FM's Breakfast Show, Dr. Seidu highlighted that under Ghana's constitution, the military's primary role is defense against external threats, while internal security roles are secondary and should not be overused.
He also noted that some military personnel are unhappy with their involvement, describing it as ineffective and tainted by corruption.
The government recently deployed over 100 military personnel to protect water bodies from the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
