The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG) has warned that Ghana could be forced to import water for pharmaceutical production if illegal mining isn’t urgently addressed.
At their 2024 annual meeting, PSG highlighted how environmental damage from illegal mining is raising water treatment costs for local manufacturing, driving up medicine prices.
PSG President, Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh, stressed that local manufacturers rely on clean water, especially for producing infusions.
He urged the government to implement stricter measures against illegal mining, warning that failure to act could severely impact the country's pharmaceutical industry.
