Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, a prominent Ghanaian clergyman, has voiced concerns over the government's failure to tackle illegal mining, known as galamsey.

In an interview on TV3, he highlighted the severe damage galamsey causes to forests, water bodies, and Ghana's economic future.

Turkson warned that Ghana risks becoming a failed state if the destructive practices continue, criticizing the loss of Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of sustainable mining.

He stressed the urgent need to protect the environment, warning that galamsey will worsen food insecurity and economic instability, especially in the face of climate change.
