The Ghanaian military has intensified its fight against illegal mining (galamsey) with a renewed crackdown under the “Operation Halt” initiative.
On the first day, soldiers destroyed 18 chanfans, 10 water pumping machines, and one excavator at illegal mining sites.
The operation focuses on water bodies and protected areas that have suffered from severe environmental damage due to galamsey.
This move follows public pressure from environmental groups and citizens.
The destroyed equipment is crucial to illegal mining, and its removal is expected to make it difficult for operators to continue their activities.
