The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG) plans to strike on October 10, 2024, despite Organised Labour's decision to suspend its nationwide strike over illegal mining (galamsey).

UG-UTAG criticizes the government's inadequate response to the galamsey crisis and feels their concerns were ignored during discussions with Organised Labour.

President Prof. Ransford Gyampo stressed the urgency of the situation and affirmed the association's commitment to independent action. He stated that all 16 public universities support the strike, emphasizing UG-UTAG's role in advocating for environmental protection in Ghana.
