Galamsey: We were beaten by armed men who erased our recorded footage – Erastus Asare Donkor

Erastus Asare Donkor, an award-winning journalist with Multimedia Group, recounted a dangerous encounter while investigating illegal mining, or "galamsey," in Ghana's Asumenya Forest Reserve.

On October 20, 2024, Donkor and his team were documenting the environmental impact on local water sources when armed assailants ambushed and abducted them.

The attackers physically assaulted the journalists, confiscated equipment, and deleted critical footage exposing the illegal mining.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Donkor described the intense fear they felt, underscoring the risks journalists face in reporting on sensitive environmental issues impacting communities and ecosystems.
