Galamsey fight: Deployment of military not sustainable – Eco-Conscious Citizens

Eco-Conscious Citizens has called for a state of emergency in areas affected by illegal mining (galamsey) to address the environmental damage.

The group’s coordinator, Awula Serwah, said temporary crackdowns are not enough, as illegal miners often return after military interventions.

She urged the government to involve communities in reporting illegal activities and to halt small-scale mining until a lasting solution is found.

This comes after the deployment of soldiers under "Operation Halt" to target galamsey sites, but Serwah emphasized the need for stricter laws, alternative livelihoods, and stronger community engagement.
