Prof. Gladys Nyarko Ansah, a member of the University of Ghana Galamsey Research Team, has attributed the recent surge in illegal mining, or "galamsey," to the upcoming general election.
She believes that the political climate has emboldened individuals to act with impunity, as leaders are reluctant to crack down on illegal activities for fear of losing votes.
This hesitation has led to a noticeable increase in galamsey operations.
Prof. Ansah warned that this lack of enforcement is endangering the country's natural resources and urged the government to prioritize the nation’s long-term well-being over political interests.
