Ghana’s firefighting crisis: 53.6% of fire appliances either faulty or out of service

Ghana's firefighting capability is in crisis, with over half of the country's fire engines either faulty or out of use, impacting emergency response times.

According to a Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) report obtained by JoyNews, 133 out of 248 fire trucks nationwide are non-operational, with severe shortages in the Upper East, Oti, Volta, and Upper West regions.

In Greater Accra, only limited trucks are functional in key areas like Adenta and Tema.

This equipment shortage hampers response to fires, rescues, and other emergencies, as outdated fire trucks and non-functioning hydrants worsen the situation.

Urgent investment in equipment and infrastructure is needed to ensure public safety.
