GhanaWeb Polls: 78% of respondents unsatisfied with Supreme Court's ruling on voter register

A number of respondents who took part in a poll conducted by GhanaWeb have said they are unsatisfied with the Supreme Court’s ruling to allow the Electoral Commission (EC) go ahead with the compilation of a new voters register.

A further 2,089 votes representing 19.81% said they had no objections to the Supreme Court’s ruling while 152 voters (1.44) indicated they were undecided about the verdict.

The Supreme Court in a ruling on June 24, 2020, allowed for the EC go ahead with its decision to compile a voter registration exercise ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Two groups, the opposition NDC and a Private citizen Mark Takyi-Banson filed a case asking the apex court to stop the EC from compiling the register or allow the use of the birth certificate and voters ID card by prospective voters as proof of identification.

The 7-member panel presided over by Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah in its ruling held that the EC is an independent body and will only be directed by the court if it acts contrary to the law.

The seven-member panel that heard the case included Justices Jones Dotse, Paul Baffoe Bonnie, Sule Gbagegbe, Samuel K. Marful-Sau, Nene Amegatcher, and Professor Ashie Kotey.

This poll question gained 141,132 responses in 48 hours and over 2,000 people commented under the poll expressing divergent views about the Electoral Commission and the new voters’ register.
