Govt to deploy river guards, navy to fight galamsey – Lands Minister

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has announced that the government will soon implement significant measures to combat illegal mining (galamsey).

In an interview on October 8, he described a recent meeting with Organised Labour as "productive" and revealed plans to repeal LI 2462, which currently allows mining in forest reserves.

Jinapor stated that river guards and the navy will patrol water bodies as part of the new initiatives.

He emphasized that agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, but reiterated the government's commitment to intensifying efforts against galamsey, including ongoing operations like Operation Halt.
