A renowned business magnet Mr. Ibrahim Mahama of Engineers and Planners fame has promised to pay the medical bills of a fourteen-year-old student, Esther Asantewaa Darko.

Esther is a student of Baatsona JHS B in Sakumono, a suburb in the Greater Accra region, who is a hole-in-heart patient.

Esther Darko has been diagnosed with the condition for over four years and was on the verge of losing her life after unsuccessfully trying to raise funds to perform heart surgery.

The brother of former President John Mahama, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama came to Esther’s rescue following an interview on Ahotor FM’s morning show, Adekye Mu Nsem with the host Citizen Kofi last Thursday.

Asantewaa’s mother, who brews pito for sale in Tema, along with a girl child facilitator, some teachers of the Baastona JHS B, and a doctor from the LEKMA hospital accompanied the victim to Ahotor 92.3 FM at Tema, Lashibi for the interview.

The patient who looked very weak in appearance and had difficulty in speaking, said her condition is worsening and her situation was desperate. She, therefore, called on Ghanaians for support through a specially opened account for her at the Labone Branch of A. D. B. in Accra via account number 125200016266650.

Barely twenty - four hours after the interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM, a call from the office of Mr Ibrahim Mahama to Ambassador Victor Smith, former High Commissioner to the U.K who was the guest on the show, indicated that Mr. Ibrahim Mahama had heard the touching story of Asantewaa Darko on the radio and promised to cover the cost of surgery which is $9,000.00.

Asantewaa’s mother, Madam Ernestina Yenkata, and Madam Rita Akuribire, the girl's facilitator at the school, could not hide their joy and surprise after the producer, Nana Dogbe informed them of Mr. Mahama’s decision. They hailed Ambassador Smith and Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for coming to the rescue of the young girl.

The headmistress of Baastona JHS B Madam Akua Serwaa Yankey and some teachers who accompanied the patient and her family to Ahotor 92.3 FM had earlier described her as brilliant, ambitious, and a diligent student and added that it will be a dream come true if she undergoes a successful heart surgery and returns to school to continue her studies.

Meanwhile, the management of Ahotor FM has been informed that the surgery is scheduled for Thursday 29th June 2023 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital's Cardio department.
