The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr John Boadu, has said he is not involved in illegal mining (galamsey) to raise money for his party.

Following the mentioning of his name in a recent viral video in connection with galamsey, Mr Boadu told Accra-based Asempa FM on Thursday, February 6, 2020 that his hands are not into galamsey.

He, however, indicated that although there were plans for some trained NPP youth to be employed on a mining concession of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, the plan was never implemented due to a lack of cooperation by the team members.

“The thing didn’t even take-off”, Mr Boadu said, adding: “Nobody came to me for money to start it and nobody has even brought any money to me”.

“When you listen to the tape making the rounds, nowhere was it said that I, John Boadu, have received something in relation to mining,” he said.

Mr Boadu also noted that the NPP’s plan to engage its youth on the Ashanti Regional Chairman’s concession was for large-scale mining with the necessary documentation and not illegal mining.

“He [Chairman Wontumi] has the concession in addition to a licence to do large-scale mining similar to AngloGold Ashanti’s.”
