President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Roland Affail-Monney has revealed that Acting Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh has agreed to set up a committee to investigate reports of assault on a reporter of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, Della Russell Ocloo by some men in uniform as well as civilians.
Speaking in a Interview with ABC News, Mr. Monney said “Just last night I had a conversation with the IGP as a result of pressure we are mounting on officaildom on Della Ocloo’s issue and the IGP did assure as that he is interested in the matter and that he intends to set up a committee and for the first time, a journalist will be a member of this committee to ensure that Justice is done to Della,” he said.
He added that it is not the case that the Ghana Journalists Association only issues statements after its members are attacked. He noted that that the leadership of the Association pursues such issues in many forms including providing legal counsel and demanding compensation for assaulted journalists.
“We don’t keep mute because we swore an oath to our hearts. We bleed anytime a member is attacked and we will never keep mute when they are attacked,” he opined.
Mrs Ocloo, the Tema reporter of GCGL, went to the Glorious wave Church on Sunday, August 4, 2019 as a follow up to a protest march by members of the 1,000 Women’s March in a bid to find out the Church leader’s reaction to the women’s peaceful demonstration against his controversial comment about Asante, Fante and Ewe women and how they behave in marriages.
She observed many people kneeling and receiving “blessings” from Prophet Badu-Kobi after preaching and decided to film with her phone.
Unable to physically attack her for what they described as ‘intrusion’, the members of the church accosted the reporter, threatened to beat her and later called in the police who arrested her and sent her to the police station.
