The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Global KNUST Alumni Association have called for calm following threats by some old students.
The threats of violence are in connection with dissatisfaction regarding the conversion of Arica, Unity and University halls into mixed halls of residence.
KNUST management reiterated its commitment to implementing the committee’s recommendations on halls conversion.
A statement issued by the university explained that management had taken notice of the concerns expressed by the various alumni groups concerning the conversion of Unity, Africa and University halls from single sex to mixed halls.
“We wish to reiterate that we have always been sensitive to these concerns and are committed to addressing same,” it said.
It will be recalled that following the disturbances on the University Campus last year, which led to its brief closure, the chancellor, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, set up a committee to investigate the disturbances, which, among others, were thought to have been precipitated by the conversion of the halls.
According to the management of the university, the committee's report is currently being studied by the chancellor, and management awaits same for due implementation of the recommendations thereof.
“We, in the circumstances, wish to reiterate management's commitment to implementing the recommendations of the committee,” it added.
In the meantime, management urged all concerned parties to exercise the utmost restraint to allow peace to prevail, particularly in the interest of academic work and activities of the university in general.
Global KNUST Alumni Association
The Global KNUST Alumni Association noted that Otumfuo has assured all that he is studying the report of the Rose Owusu Committee and then, upon consultation with all stakeholders of the university, make his judgement public.
“The resolution of these issues, therefore, rests with our revered chancellor, and we the members of the Global Alumni Association have confidence in his ability to deliver on his promise.
“The Global KNUST Alumni Association, therefore, fully supports the call by the SRC and GRASAG for all to remain calm and avoid any form of violent confrontations which will potentially disrupt the 2019/2020 academic calendar and bring the name of the university into disrepute.
“We, TEKNOKRATS, stand prepared at all times to engage stakeholders of the university in resolving this impasse in a peaceful manner. We, therefore, stand together with all well-meaning Ghanaians to protect the KNUST brand and image,” it added.
