MP, Seth Terkper support victims of Somanya rainstorm with roofing sheets

Member of Parliament (MP) for Yilo Krobo, Lawyer Magnus Kofi Amoatey and former Finance Minister, Seth Terkper have jointly donated 20 bundles of roofing sheets to support victims of the recent rainstorm in Somanya.

The storm which lasted just a couple of five minutes also rendered extensive damages to cars including vehicles belonging to the staff of Barclays Bank, Yilo Star microfinance, the AGT Microfinance among others.

The Monday afternoon wind also pulled down a tree near the Somanya Polyclinic onto the main Somanya-Kpong highway.

Lawyer Amoatey who recalled the commitment of various regional leaders exhibited in their response to the disaster said the effects of the storm did not know political parties and hence the need to support the affected residents irrespective of their political affiliations.

“Disaster strikes and when it strikes, it doesn’t know party colors,” said the lawmaker.

Most residential buildings, particularly in Plau and Akutunya, both suburbs of Somanya, had their roofs ripped off in the storm, a situation the Member of Parliament identified as enough reason to donate the roofing sheets as a first measure towards assisting the victims.

The MP together with the former finance minister, MCE for the area, Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor, Deputy Eastern Region Minister, Samuel Ayertey Nuertey and police and NADMO officials had visited various affected premises where they extended their condolences to the affected persons and commiserated with them.

Donating the items on behalf of the NDC party as a whole, Lawyer Amoatey said the gesture was to assist the affected individuals so they can rehabilitate or refurbish their homes.

Representing affected residents, madam Gifty Serwaah Adamptey who also suffered some losses during the disaster, expressed gratitude for the gesture exhibited by the NDC party. She was grateful that the MP and the rest had seen their plight as their constituents and had decided to assist them in their time of need.

Yilo Krobo Municipal Budget Officer who received the items on behalf of the MCE, Mr. Joseph Atta-Baah described the presentation as a good gesture shown to the assembly and the affected people.

Mr. Atta-Baah who said other individuals had similarly contributed towards the support of the victims said the assembly together with the MCE for the area was not resting on its oars to raise further assistance to help affected residents.

He urged individuals and organizations to contribute further towards providing relief to the victims and further assured the donors that the donations would be given to the about 600 people who suffered various damages to properties.

Asked if the assembly was not taking too long to respond to the needs of the victims, the budget officer who disagreed with this assertion explained that the municipal NADMO office has already held a symposium for the affected persons where enough data on the situation had been captured to guide the assembly in its operations.

The MP was accompanied by the constituency chairman of the Yilo Krobo National Democratic Congress, Mr. Narh Agbo as well as other NDC party executives and faithful of the party in the constituency.
