Mahama has deceived us - Agordeke residents

Residents of Agordeke, a fishing community which serves as the food baskets and one of the busiest commercial communities in the Kwahu - Afram Plains North District of the Eastern Region have heavily descended on President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress for failing to provide them with a ferry.

President Mahama in April this year during his “Accounting to the People Tour” in the Region commissioned a new ferry and a water taxi for residents of Agordeke which re-connected the Afram Plains area to Kpando-Torkor in the Volta region after the old ferry broke down 10 years ago.

The commissioned ferry after the ceremony conveyed the President and his entourage from Agordeke to Kpando – Torkor and ever since the ferry has not been brought back to Agordeke with little or no knowledge about where the ferry has been taken to.

This situation has led to the death of many travelers on the lake through frequent boat accidents as well as negatively impacted on both transportation and the local economy since market activities in the area have come to a standstill.

The Mahama led NDC administration in the run up to the 2012 general Elections,
after having report of the difficulties the people go through when crossing of the Volta Lake, promised them of constructing a ferry for them when voted into power.

This promise, according to the residents made them to vote massively for the NDC in the 2012 elections but for the NDC to come for the faulty ferry to repair it and has since not brought back to Agordeke.

Scores of the residents who spoke to BRYTFMONLINE.COM expressed disappointment in President Mahama for deceiving them and failing to fulfill his promises of rehabilitating their roads, building nursing training, the construction of the Community Day Senior High School among others.

The residents who noted that, the absence of the ferry has made crossing the lake difficulty however, promised to votes against the NDC in the upcoming December polls since they have taken them for granted for the past years.

A staff [name withheld] working on the ferry disclosed that, the ferry developed a fault after the commission and that order has been made for materials from abroad to fix it.

He however blamed management of Volta Lake Transport Company, Operates of the ferry and the government for failing to communicate to the people about the state of affairs of the ferry.
