Some heavily-built men believed to be the Presidential Guards of H.E John Dramani Mahama on Saturday descended on some mourners at Adansi Fumso.
The reason for their molestation, Today gathered, stemmed from the fact that the mourners demonstrated the change of government sign while the president’s convoy was passing by.
Numbering about 15 and heavily built, the Presidential Guards stopped their speeding Toyota Land Cruiser and pounced on the mourners bringing the funeral to an abrupt end as many had to flee for their dear lives.
The women and old men whose legs could not carry them faster were subjected to severe beating as blood could be seen on the clothes of most of them.
It was not clear what the reaction of the president was as his car did not stop and passed by, but other party functionaries showed clear signs of endorsement for the brutal attack on the funeral attendants.
It was not clear whether the NDC as a party had planned to attack anybody who dared tease or hoot at the presidential convoy while they are in Ashanti as the party has usually complained of verbal and sometimes physical attacks on their buses and members on campaign in the region.
Early this year, the party reported of similar attacks on their members and buses in Ejisu when the president was on a similar campaign tour of the region.
When the attention of the Ashanti regional First Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Andrews Nana Kwesi, was drawn to the brutal occurrence, journalists were shocked with his response.
“These people are on special assignment,” he spat, without waiting for any further probing as the journalists were clearly awed by his response.
The president began his four-day campaign tour of the Ashanti region on Saturday focusing on Adansi areas namely New Edubiase, Adansi Asokwa, and Obuasi East and West constituencies.
