Menzgold customers will answer for their actions – ACP Kwesi Ofori

The police have explained why customers of defunct gold dealership company Menzgold were arrested at the Jubilee House, the official residence of the president on Tuesday.

The police swooped on more than 50 irate customers who had besieged the premises to ostensibly protest against their locked-up investments.

“The organizers needed to inform the police. Their discussion with police ended in deadlock and they have no authority to embark upon this activity.

“In view of this by the powers invested in us as police officers, we’ve arrested them and they are under escort to the regional headquarters. We did not allow them to get down at all,” ACP Kwesi Ofori intimated.

Consequently, ACP Kwesi Ofori said the crime of the customers would be treated with the full rigors of the law.

An estimated 200 aggrieved customers were expected to embark on the march on Tuesday, but were warned not to proceed with their intended action.

Another bus carrying other customers enroute to the Jubilee House also changed route to Kawukudi, a suburb of Accra, after receiving information about the arrest of their colleagues.

The Coalition of Aggrieved Customers of Menzgold Ghana wrote to the Command on Thursday, February 6 for permission to march to the presidency on Tuesday, February 11 to present a petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Earlier last month, some 92 customers were arrested by the Police after they had trespassed on the private residence of Nana Appiah Mensah, CEO of Menzgold to demand their investments.
