Dr. Steve Manteaw, Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), has criticized Ghana's Minerals Commission for its inadequate staffing and resources.
He highlighted that the current office setup, including the one in Wa covering Bole and surrounding areas, is insufficient for effective regulation.
Dr. Manteaw called for additional offices in regions like the Upper West and Upper East to improve oversight.
He also expressed concern about the dominance of foreign miners due to the lack of financial support for local operators, leading to revenue losses as gold is smuggled across borders.
