Minority demands roadmap for payment of GH₵300m debt owed WAEC

The Minority caucus on the Education Committee in Parliament is urging an urgent stakeholder meeting to address the government's GH₵300 million debt to the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The debt has hindered WAEC's ability to pay service providers, including invigilators and examiners.

Ranking Member Peter Nortsu-Kotoe highlighted outstanding arrears from 2022 and 2023, with no payments made for 2024. This debt risks the quality of upcoming exams, as experienced examiners are leaving due to unpaid services.

Nortsu-Kotoe warned that the BECE, scheduled for July 8-12, 2024, and the WASSCE, from July 1 to August 31, 2024, could face serious challenges if the debt is not cleared.
