An aspiring independent presidential candidate for election 2020, Marricke Kofi Gane, has suggested the lack of punishment for illegal miners has worsened the galamsey saga.

Appearing on ‘Ghana Kasa’ on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said, politicians who are culprits and holding high political office have made it difficult to deal with galamsey.

He told host Uncle Bright that both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have both failed n dealing with the canker because they allow party financiers to engage in the act due to the support for the party.

“I think it’s a political issue. The issue of galamsey is political and it is political because the NPP made a lot of noise about it in 2016 prior to the election. They hounded the NDC and promised to deal with the problem. Now the NDC is in opposition and is making noise about it. I will not behave like them. I will enforce the law and even if you sponsored my campaign and you engage in it, I will not spare you.”

“When I come into power, my dealings with galamsey is not going to be based on the fact that the culprit is my cousin and so let him be. No! If people have to be punished, they have to be punished. We have arrested a lot of illegal miners but failed to prosecute them. We have a problem. People will continue to engage in galamsey because they know people have not been punished.

He stressed the point that we have relaxed in enforcing our laws hence the audacity by some people to engage in galamsey.
