Delegates of the National Democratic Congress have elected Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo as the party’s national chairman.

The grassroot politician beat stiff competition from veteran party member Dan Abodakpi, former Attorney General Betty Mould Iddrisu, former NDC General Secretary Alhaji Huudu Yahaya, and businessman Danny Annan

Provision results from the 9th National Delegates Congress of the party which is nearing completion put Mr. Ampofo in the lead with 3,656 ballots cast as against Mr Abodakpi’s 2,199.

The businessman managed the least votes of 309 followed by Mrs. Mould Iddrisu who secured 354 votes. The veteran Huudu Yahaya polled 1823 votes.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo, 56, has served in various positions within the party, including National Organiser and Director of Elections.

He started as a branch executive of the party and became a district chief executive and later a Member of Parliament which opened more opportunities for him to be made a regional minister and later minister of state.

He played an influential role in the party’s 2008 electoral victory. For over 16 years, he represented the NDC at IPAC.

Political watchers described him as an experienced person who could marshal the party for victory in 2020 as a national chairman.

He was a Minister for Local Government and Rural Development between 2011 and 2013.
