Former National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Wofa Yaw Boateng Gyan says the party’s constitution is not against a contest for the party’s flagbearership.
He believes anyone against a contest for the party’s flagbearership is an obstacle to democracy.
Although the party has not opened up nominations for the party’s flagbearership, two names have popped up. It is rumored former Minister of Finance and Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Kwabena Duffour and former President John Dramani Mahama will contest to lead the party at the 2024 elections.
Wofa Yaw Boateng Gyan, a close friend of Dr. Kwabena Duffour has however shared that his friend has not informed him of any plans to lead the party in election 2024.
According to him, even if Dr. Duffour wants to lead the party, there is nothing wrong with such an aspiration. “It is not wrong for a contest to be encouraged in the party. Politics is democracy and there is nothing wrong if my friend wants to run for the presidency.”
The politician noted that he will throw his full weight behind Dr. Duffour should he run for the party’s flagbearership. “If he contests and wins, the entire NDC should come support him and if Mahama also wins, the entire party and Dr. Duffour himself will support Mahama.”
In an interview with Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show, Wofa Yaw Boateng Gyan said, “I don’t see any big deal about someone contesting JM for the flagbearership. No one should stop a flagbearer hopeful from declaring their intention. The only thing the NDC should be against in anyone anti NDC and not anti-Mahama for flagbearer.
We will not be democratic if we prevent anyone from contesting Mahama for flagbearership. Mahama will also not be democratic if he doesn’t encourage contest for the flagbearership. Duffour is my friend and if he wants my support for flagbearer, I’ll give him that.”
He however cautioned rumor mongers to be careful as such stories can divide a party “and at the end of the day we will suffer another defeat. But we should all rally to support anyone who wins the flagbearership.”
Background
It has emerged that there is a split in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as factions are beginning to emerge on its leadership ahead of the 2024 polls
Sources indicate that the General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia fondly called General Mosquito is lacing his boots to contest for the National Chairmanship position of the party.
According to sources, he will be backing the ticket of Kwabena Duffour who has come to save the NDC after two straight electoral defeats at the hands of President Akufo-Addo.
It is believed that in Asiedu Nketia’s camp, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah will contest for the General Secretary position whiles Kobby Barlon contests for the National Organizer position.
It is also believed the current women organizer Hannah Bissiw is also in the camp of Johnson Asiedu Nketia and will be contesting to be maintained as women organizer for the party as they join hands to save the NDC from John Dramani Mahama’s shackles.
Meanwhile, in John Dramani Mahama’s camp, it is said that Ofosu Ampofo will contest for the Chairmanship position whiles Fiifi Kwetey goes for the General Secretary position.
Sources say Obuobia Darko will contest for Women’s Organizer whiles the National Organizer position is contested by the incumbent Akamba Joshua.
