The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed that it has uncovered an elaborate plot to arrest its officers publicly to humiliate them.

The revelation follows the arrest of the National Communications Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi by officials of the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

He was picked by officers in plain clothe minutes after he participated in a live studio discussion on UTV’s “Adekye Nsroma” morning show. Mr. Gyamfi was subsequently granted bail.

However, at a press briefing to respond to the arrest, Director of Communications of the party, Lawyer Kakra Essamuah stated that the NDC has credible intelligence that the arrest forms part of a larger scheme of intimidation and harassment plotted against executives of the opposition.

This, he said, is calculated at breaking the NDC’s front and scaring its members into silence in the run-up to the 2020 elections.

Mr. Essamuah, however, warned that the NDC is an unshakable force and possess the capacity to withstand and fend off such brazen attacks on its leaders and members.

“While remaining law-abiding, we will not sit like ducks on top of water to be picked up one after the other by a handful of rogue elements within the Police acting on misguided orders from the Presidency,” he warned.

“We shall challenge the abuse of power to every extent possible.”

“We shall deploy every legal and social arsenal at our disposal in defence of our rights to free expression and freedom of association.”

“We shall also defend our rights to privacy and means of communication,” he stated.

The NDC, he said, will not surrender its rights and that of its members to a democratically elected leader carrying himself as a despot.

He indicated that they will be embarking on a series of activities to press home the party’s demand for an end to tyranny and also demonstrate their disgust to acts of oppression being perpetrated by President Akufo-Addo and his hawkish relatives in government.

He called on officers of the Ghana Police Service to abide by their professional ethics and primary responsibility of maintaining law and order and uphold their loyalty to the state and not to any government or political party.

The police, he said, are not appendages of Akufo-Addo and must not act as such.
