NPP scared of losing 2020 hence prosecuting Ampofo to disrupt our campaign - Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has accused the ruling Patriotic Party (NPP) of disrupting its well structured and well-organized campaign meant to get the elephant party out of power through the ongoing Chairman Ofosu Ampofo’s case.

The chief scribe who is popularly referred to as ‘General Mosquito’ told Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that because the NPP has realized the NDC was on a mission to win power in 2020, and they (NPP) could not match their campaign strategy, they have resulted to the abuse of power by prosecuting a case against Mr. Ampofo without basis.

In his view, Ghana’s democracy was under attack and the rule of law, freedom, and justice have been abused by the government in the case of Mr.Ampofo.

In assigning reasons for his claims, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said the Emile Short Commission that investigated the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence implicated people for engaging the services of unlawful persons as security officers who abused and assaulted people; but we have abandoned all these clear violations and focusing on audio downloaded online.

He said: ” we saw ministers of state confessing that the persons who were seen using the police vehicles and wielding guns were not authorized. The Commission recommended punishment but the government is covering up these crimes. The Commission also called for the prosecution of all the persons implicated. But we have abandoned these recommendations and gone forward to download audio online claiming that it was the voice of Ampofo and now wasting state resources, time and prosecuting the case. The saddest part is that people are now asking if it was right for us to practice democracy. If we claim to be practicing democracy, why should we abuse power and depend on frivolous claims and prosecute a man who stood against the violence that characterized the by-election?”

The prosecution of the NDC chairman he opined was only teaching people to be violent and support the government to abuse office by coming after the opposition party and its leaders.

”What is happening now is that government is teaching the next generation to be abusers and violent since that was the only way they could be protected by the state. The state is not interested in is prosecuting Mr. Ampofo, they are rather interested in disrupting our campaign strategies. It is an abuse of the democratic processes that we had fought for. The NPP has realized they cannot beat our campaign strategies and so they have resulted in the abuse of the processes to disrupt us.”

He said: “government is aware the case has no merit but they have plans to disrupt us to have our plans and strategies affected. But I know Ghanaians will soon rise up against these abuses and fight against the system under this government.”
