Lawyer and former Ghana's High Commissioner to India Sam Pee Yalley suspects the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) wants the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission to be impeached ‘just to ensure Akufo-Addo’s victory in 2020'.
According to him, he knows the President to be an upholder of the rule of law and that “he will be disappointed if the president uses ‘a hanky panky’ way to win the elections”.
His comment comes on the back of an impeachment process that has been initiated against Madam Charlotte Osei.
A five-member committee was last month initiated to look into allegation of corruption against the EC chairperson.
The inquisitorial committee, whose members are yet to be made public, is expected to investigate Madam Charlotte Osei, together with her two deputies, Georgina Opoku-Amankwaa, who is in-charge of Corporate Services, and Amadu Sulley, in charge of Operations.
If you may recall, some unnamed staff petitioned President Akufo-Addo to trigger an impeachment process against Madam Charlotte Osei.
The accusation against Charlotte Osei included directing of GH¢3.9 million to partition an office, her receipt of a Toyota Land Cruiser from the Mahama government, expending about $14 million when the Public Procurement Authority had authorised her to use only $7.5 million.
Mrs Osei launched her own attack, drawing in the two deputies: Georgina Opoku-Amankwaa and Amadu Sulley.
Contributing to a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s 'Alhaji and Alhaji' programme, Saturday, Sam Pee Yalley said the “NDC will resist any attempt to rig the 2020 elections”.
“If Nana Addo will win the 2020 election, it will not be by tricks; it will be by what he has done. NDC will not; shall not allow any attempt to rig the 2020 elections; they should not dream. They can bring the best but we are capable . . . if they think by invoking ROPAA and other tricks they can win the elections, they will be smiling at the wrong side of their mouth,” he added.
