National ID card process to be completed by first quarter of 2020 – Veep

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that by the end of the first quarter of next year, the National Identification Card process will be completed for persons above 15 years old across the country.

“Clearly, by the end of the first quarter of next year, we would complete issuing the cards for anybody above 15 years old and continue with those below. This is so critical for us a nation to be able to identify every resident in Ghana,” he explained.

Speaking at the 3rd Ghana Business Chamber Awards night in Accra, November 23, Dr. Bawumia also revealed that some 4 million homes within the next six months will be tagged under the Digital Addressing System.

“The Nation Builders Corps graduates are now in the field and they are beginning the process for 4 million homes to be tagged with their unique digital addresses within the next six months and this will be done for free for every home,” he disclosed.




National ID Card extension

The National Identification Authority (NIA) in a statement issued on Friday, November 22 said it would extend mass registration for the Ghana Card in the Upper East, Upper West, Bono, Ahafo and Bono East regions from Saturday, November 23rd to 30th.

According to the statement issued by Mr Francis Palmdeti, the Head of Corporate Affairs of NIA, said all registration centres in those regions would continue to register applicants till Saturday, November 30.

Adding, all prospective applicants are to take advantage of the extension to get registered.

Palmdeti cautioned that the NIA does not charge a fee for registration and issuance of the Ghana Card, noting that, any demand for fee payment at the registration centre is illegal and criminal.

The NIA says it would soon operate registration centres at offices of cognate institutions such as the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA).

Permanent NIA offices would also be established at the Regional, Municipal and District levels by March 2020 to afford all Ghanaians who were not registered during the mass registration exercise the opportunity to do so.
