The Old Vandals’ Association of North America (OVANA) has expressed frustration over the government’s lack of action against illegal mining (galamsey), calling it a national emergency.

In an October 7 statement, the Commonwealth Hall alumni group demanded the government declare a state of emergency, impose an immediate ban on all galamsey activities, and repeal the mining law, LI 2462.

OVANA warned that failure to act within two weeks would lead to mass student protests nationwide.

They urged presidential candidates to commit to tackling galamsey and called on Ghanaians and international bodies to join the fight to protect the country’s environment.
